Part One — Preface and Introduction
Nowhere in the world do ancient burial mounds dominate a landscape as they do in Bahrain. They spread over such wide areas, and stand so close together, that early travellers took the rugged surface for a natural phenomenon rather than the work of human hands. Archaeology has since proved that they were raised by the people of Dilmun, the realm that managed the trade between Mesopotamia, South Arabia and India some four thousand years ago.
The mounds are an expression of the honour in which the Dilmunites held the memory of their ancestors, and they remain a defining feature of the Bahraini landscape despite heavy modern losses. They first entered scholarly literature through the explorations of E. L. Durand, published in 1880, and were elaborated by the later investigations of F. B. Prideaux in 1912, E. J. H. Mackay in 1929 and P. B. Cornwall in 1943.
When the Danish Archaeological Bahrain-Expedition began work in 1953, its directors P. V. Glob and T. G. Bibby had a different priority: to find the settlements of the people buried in the mounds. Through the 1950s and 1960s they concentrated on the tell of Qala'at al-Bahrain, the Barbar temples, and the Dilmun trading station at Tell F3 and Tell F6 on Failaka in Kuwait, rather than on the cemeteries themselves.
For comparative purposes two mounds were nevertheless excavated at Saar in the first season of 1953–54. Then, between 1961 and 1963, bulldozers began destroying mounds south of Aali village, and a rescue operation summarily excavated about fifty of them. Most were of average size, but two huge Royal Mounds were also partly explored. Conditions were far from ideal, yet the work yielded observations of lasting value.
Besides the Aali campaigns, the volume reports a rescue excavation in the Umm Jidr mound field in 1965, two mounds in the Dar Kulayb cemetery in 1965, one mound near Buri at the southern edge of the Aali field in 1959, and an enigmatic heap of skeletons known as the Charnelhouse, found in the 1960s beside the Budayyi road, which produced an important collection of stamp seals.
The exact number of mounds in Bahrain is unknown. From air photographs of about 1952 Bibby estimated some 100,000, while Larsen, using photographs of 1972–75, reached about 172,000. Since the 1960s the total has fallen steeply as roads and housing expanded: by 2006 perhaps no more than 20,000 survived. Several thousand — possibly up to 8,000 — have been investigated, but only about 265 excavations have been published.
The stated aim of the book is to analyse social complexity in Early Dilmun society on the evidence of its burials. It opens with the chronology of the period, reviews the types of ordinary mounds and of Royal Mounds and their dating, discusses the original appearance of the monuments, and only then presents the fifty-four burials excavated by the Danish expedition.
Most pottery from the mounds is local and belongs to the East Arabian tradition of the late third and early second millennia named after the Barbar temple site. Alongside it appear vessels of the Mesopotamian tradition and of the so-called Eastern traditions imported from the Indo-Iranian area. Notably, Umm an-Nar pottery from Oman has not been identified in any of the graves published here.
Three fabric types serve as a common language of description. Ware 1 is heavily tempered with sand and whitish calcium-carbonate particles and is used only for handmade pots; ware 2 is more lightly tempered, paler, and includes some wheel-made vessels; ware 3 is a hard, fine, well-fired fabric containing red ochre inclusions, employed almost exclusively for the distinctive B73 jars.
Specialists contributed a series of appendices: digital mapping of the Saar cemetery from air photographs, the animal bones from Aali, Saar and Dar Kulayb, recalibrated radiocarbon dates from Bahrain and Kuwait, the Charnelhouse stamp seals, the so-called omega-shaped holdfasts, and the Hysore collection of salvaged grave goods. Together they turn a rescue archive into a usable scientific corpus.
Part Two — The Chronology of the Early Dilmun Period
The graves are dated through a framework built on pottery and stamp seals from three key excavations: Qala'at al-Bahrain, Tell F3 and Tell F6 on Failaka, and the Barbar temples. Later work at the Saar settlement, at the cemetery of Karranah 1, and in the storerooms of the Bahrain National Museum has refined this framework further, giving a chain of periods labelled Ia, Ib, IIa, IIb, IIc and beyond.
Period I and the first part of period II are the soundest links in the chain. They rest on the dating of imported Mesopotamian pottery, on the correlation of period IIa pottery with stamp seals of Arabian Gulf and Proto-Dilmun style, and on a horizon of diagnostic types and Mature Dilmun seals that ties Failaka period 1 to Qala'at al-Bahrain IIb and Barbar Temple IIb.
The end of period II is far less secure, simply because the remains are scanty. Occupation levels in excavations 519 and 520 at Qala'at al-Bahrain break off after period IIc, shortly after the last Barbar temple was built. The great majority of burial mounds likewise belong to periods I and IIa–c, and later seal styles common on Failaka are rare or absent in Bahrain.
This scarcity points to a dramatic decline in occupation after period IIc. One inhabited pocket of that later time was found by the West Wall at Qala'at al-Bahrain and labelled period IIF, and the pottery of the Saar settlement has allowed the definition of a Pottery Period 4 that is later than IIc and partly comparable with IIF.
An important marker for the graves is the B73 jar, once known variously as the Dilmun, burial, cylindrical or screw-top jar. Velde distinguished two variants at Karranah 1: an early form, B73A, with a well-defined shoulder ledge, and a late form, B73B, with a smooth transition between body and neck. The early form belongs mainly to periods IIb–c; the late form post-dates IIc.
Other late types are harder to fix. Thin-walled wheel-made bowls resemble shapes from Tell ed-Der dated around 1640 BC, and a cylindrical flask with an out-turned rim and double carination has no convincing Mesopotamian parallel at all. Denton grouped these last shapes under the label Enigmatic pottery, and their dating remains, in the author's own words, little better than guesswork.
Stamp-seal styles supply a parallel yardstick. Style II, marked by the point-drill technique, cannot precede the mid eighteenth century BC, is common on Failaka and almost absent in Bahrain. Style III must be later still; Denton placed it broadly between 1700 and 1450 BC, and its association with Enigmatic pottery pushes its likely beginning towards the late Old Babylonian period.
Period IIIa opens the Middle Dilmun era and appears as a clear horizon of diagnostic pottery abundant in both Failaka and Bahrain. Part of the assemblage continues the Barbar tradition, but well over half — including all the diagnostic material — belongs to a Babylonian tradition, and this Mesopotamian component is one of the striking facts calling for historical explanation.
The following period, IIIb1, is anchored by a monumental building at Qala'at al-Bahrain that yielded cylinder-seal impressions, cuneiform tablets and a distinctive pottery style dated to the fifteenth century, a date supported by radiocarbon. French excavations nearby recovered tablets naming a King Agum, probably Agum III, who campaigned against the Sealand around 1465 BC.
That fifteenth-century anchor gives a terminus ante quem for period IIIa, which may therefore sit in the sixteenth century. The strong Mesopotamian element in IIIa is best explained by the de-urbanisation of southern Babylonia after Samsuiluna and the rise of the little-known Sealand Dynasty, whose distinct southern ceramic tradition is probably what the Gulf assemblages reflect.
Nineteen radiocarbon dates are now available from the Danish excavations in Bahrain and Kuwait, recalibrated with IntCal04. They agree broadly with the relative chronology, with two cautions: one charcoal sample sealed in a plaster floor is suspiciously early, probably an old-wood effect, and five shell dates appear about two centuries too old because of an underestimated marine reservoir correction.
The dates in the book follow the Middle Chronology, the author notes, by convention rather than conviction. If the Ultra Low Chronology were preferred, every year before 1400 BC would need to be shortened by a century. Gulf radiocarbon dates, with their broad error ranges, are not precise enough to settle the Mesopotamian chronology debate.
Part Three — The Ordinary Early Dilmun Mounds
The first attempt to sort the mounds chronologically was Cornwall's in 1943. He separated small cairn-like rock mounds, rarely more than four or five feet high and found on the heights near the central basin, from a larger type built of dirt and limestone chips. The gravel tumuli were two or three times the size of the rock mounds and clustered closely on level or gently sloping ground.
Larsen noted the same two generations: densely packed circular mounds on the lower plateaux, and further upslope more scattered tombs with no noticeable earthen mound but often a low ring wall around a central cist. Rescue excavations at Hamad Town in 1981–82 showed that imported Umm an-Nar pottery came from the shallow high tombs, dating them to Qala'at al-Bahrain period I.
Lowe, excavating at Hamad Town in 1982–84, described the same pair. His Rifa'a type was low, flat and uneven, with rock fill between chamber and ring wall and almost never capstones. His Barbar type had a centrally built chamber covered by capstones, surrounded by a low ring wall, both of unworked limestone blocks, with earth filling the space between them.
In this book Lowe's two labels are replaced by Frohlich's Early Type and Late Type. Comparison of the pottery with the stratified sequence from Qala'at al-Bahrain placed the Early Type in period I and the Late Type in period II, with a little overlap. Examination of the vast Hamad Town material in 1986–87, before the new National Museum opened, confirmed the division.
Geographically the two types differ sharply. Early Type mounds occupy a broad crescent around Rifa'a in the centre of the island, scattered rather than packed. The great bounded cemeteries of thousands of Late Type mounds are later, and they represent an expansion of burial into areas that had no previous graves at all — a redefinition of the island's social geography.
Late Type mounds were concentrated in eight bounded cemeteries in the north and west: at Isa Town and the villages of Saar, Aali, Buri, Karzakkan, Malikiyah and Dar Kulayb, and at the site of Umm Jidr. They were placed on land unsuitable for cultivation, typically above the ten-metre contour, while below lay the springs, the villages and the cultivated coastal strip.
The first attempt to trace the internal history of a Late Type field was Ibrahim's. Between 1977 and 1979 the Arab Expedition cut a cross-section 1.5 kilometres long through the southern part of the Saar field and classified the mounds into four types: single burials above the surface, single burials cut into bedrock, central burials with subsidiary graves, and mounds entered by a shaft.
Ibrahim suggested that each type marked a phase, with the field developing eastwards. Højlund's re-examination of the datable finds supports the main hypothesis: mounds with pottery of period IIa lie towards the west, those of periods IIb–c and later towards the east. The Burial Complex east of the field, however, proves to run parallel with the mounds rather than following them.
Two vessel types map that movement. The pear-shaped jar dominates the western, earlier graves and is most popular as a grave good in period IIa, while the B73 jar dominates the eastern graves and takes over as the preferred burial accompaniment around the beginning of period IIb. The two are common in the same cemeteries yet rarely occur together in one grave.
A late trait can also be isolated: the absence of alcoves. In the Southern Burial Complex all the early central burials have alcoves, while graves without them predominate on the periphery, among the last to be built. The same lack appears in the multi-chambered, shaft-equipped mounds at the eastern limit of Saar, which post-date period IIc.
The systematic pattern uncovered along Ibrahim's trajectory gives reason to presume that similar sequences exist elsewhere. Frifelt noted comparable tendencies at Aali, and Lowe found significant pottery differences between the northern and southern mound groups at Buri and Karzakkan, indicating that the southern mounds date to period IIa and the northern ones to periods IIb–c.
Part Four — The Royal Mounds at Aali
At the north end of the Aali cemetery stands a group of very large mounds known as the Royal Mounds. A century ago they lay south of the village; by the 1960s the village had expanded southwards, and by the 1990s it had engulfed them entirely. All appear to have been plundered in antiquity, and most were opened in the early days of archaeology when recording was sketchy.
What distinguishes them is extraordinary size and the ample free space around each. On Prideaux's map of 1912 a dotted line separates them from the thousands of ordinary mounds, two and a half to three metres high, that cover the plain to the south. Their size increases towards the north, and this gradient turns out to be historically significant.
Furthest south stood about fifty mounds some fifteen metres across and four to five metres high, a group almost entirely erased in the last decades. North of them lay about fourteen mounds around twenty-five metres across and six to eight metres high, and furthest north some fifteen mounds thirty to fifty metres across and ten to twelve metres high.
The architecture and the few surviving finds prove that these giants are contemporary with the better-dated ordinary Late Type mounds of period II. Typically a Royal Mound holds a single chamber inside the ring wall, opening towards the southwest, with alcoves and dry-stone walls — but with two storeys, four alcoves, plastered walls, and access through a passage or a shaft.
Two of the northernmost mounds break that pattern. Combining Prideaux's account of mound E with what can still be seen on the ground in 2006 shows six chambers without alcoves in a lower storey and six above them, entered by two long shafts. The alcoves were sacrificed to achieve a parallel alignment, and the stones were not merely plastered but laid in mortar.
Mound N, excavated by the Bahrain National Museum in the 1990s, has eight or perhaps twelve chambers without alcoves in two storeys. By abandoning the traditional orientation, its builders achieved efficient access through a single shaft and a central corridor. Uniquely, the whole mound was raised in horizontal levels of limestone rubble bedded in a grey sandy mortar.
The dating evidence for individual Royal Mounds is extremely slender, yet it is compatible with a model in which the cemetery grew northwards through time. Prideaux noted that the ground north of the east–west road had been cultivated in recent times, which suggests that the latest and largest mounds were pushed onto arable land in order to secure the prestige of lying furthest north.
Part Five — The Original Appearance of the Mounds
Seen from a distance the mounds look deceptively alike, with their gently curved profiles, but excavation has shown that they are heavily degraded monuments which originally took very different shapes. Mackay noticed in 1925 that many tombs had a casing of stone around the base, with signs that this circular wall once rose higher, and he wondered whether the larger tumuli had once been cylindrical towers of dry masonry.
Ibrahim took the opposite view: that the mounds always had roughly the rounded profile they show today, and that the ring wall with its heap of stones was a footing meant to stabilise the mass. He also held that mounds with a central grave and subsidiary graves were planned as single structures, all their chambers built at one time and then covered by one large mound.
Ibrahim's own section drawings, however, allow the opposite argument. Where a subsidiary grave was built against the ring wall of an earlier mound, the original face survives: in mound S-137 a tumulus only five metres across preserves a ring wall standing 1.2 metres high. The mounds therefore once had tall, visible vertical walls, later hidden by gravel from millennia of slow decay.
Where a ring wall was not protected by a later grave and stood exposed to wind and rain, it collapsed outwards and produced the rounded outline we see today. Drifted sand can sometimes be seen banked against the lower courses and against blocks that had tumbled from above, and in a few cases traces of plaster survive on the wall face, a coating that would have added greatly to its life.
Mackay's tower idea nonetheless needs modification, because in some mounds a second vertical wall has been observed higher up in the structure. The mound Glob excavated at Saar in 1954 was originally ringed by two concentric walls, the inner standing higher than the outer and forming a step. The Bahraini mounds were therefore terraced monuments, comparable in principle to a ziggurat.
Velde described the masonry in detail: the base consists of larger stones set with their narrow side outwards, above which up to ten courses were laid, diminishing in size towards the top and roughly dressed on the face. Minimum preserved heights range from about 1.20 to 1.75 metres, and for the largest graves the original height may well have exceeded two metres.
The wall face inclines inwards towards the centre of the grave, so that the monument originally formed a slightly conical cylinder, better able to withstand the pressure of the sand fill. Discrete layers of sand in the sections show that wall and fill rose together in stages: each sand deposit corresponds to one building stage of the ring wall.
This also settles the question of the multi-grave mounds. Had all the chambers been built at once, there would have been no need to dress and lay the ring-wall stones so carefully, nor to incline the face inwards, since earth would have been piled on both sides simultaneously. These are structures that grew, possibly over several generations, by the addition of later graves with incomplete ring walls.
A simple calculation supports the reconstruction. The volume of a present-day mound such as S-100 — a cone sixteen metres across and 2.3 metres high, about 231 cubic metres — is almost exactly the volume of the cylinder it once was: some 233 cubic metres for a drum 10.3 metres across and 2.8 metres high. Nothing has been lost; the tower has simply slumped into a hill.
The façade-like character of the ring walls stands out most clearly in the monumental shaft graves, where large ashlars dressed on the outer face were carefully fitted to one another despite their differing shapes. The care of the construction and the polygonal fit both indicate that the wall was meant to be seen, without any covering of sand or stone.
A stepped structure follows. The shaft graves have a second ring wall of smaller radius resting on the horizontal surface of the first fill, and probably reaching only the top of the second fill; occasionally a third, smaller wall corresponded to a third and uppermost fill, as indicated in mound 404.1 at Saar. Even small mounds sometimes preserve traces of such an upper terrace.
Almost all the burials show traces of plunder: a small depression at the summit marks the robber's trench, often visible again in section, and skeletons and grave goods lie disturbed. Nothing suggests that the Dilmunites themselves feared robbery — blocking the shafts with large stones would have been easy. Plundering probably began only after the decline of Dilmun culture, at the earliest in the post-IIc period.
Part Six — The Saar Mound Cemetery
The Danish expedition did not intend to spend much time on cemeteries, but questions of mound construction had been left unanswered, and specimens of the pottery used by the mound builders were needed for comparison with settlement material. So the programme opened in 1954 with two mounds in a group between the villages of Janabiya and Saar, both chosen for their perfectly rounded, apparently undisturbed shape.
Both, as it turned out, had been entered and robbed long before. Around 1980 Ibrahim estimated more than 15,000 mounds in the Saar field; counting on the 1959 air photographs produced a figure of about 12,561 Early Dilmun mounds. Almost the entire cemetery was removed in the 1990s for urban development, and only a few groups of mounds still stood in 2006.
Mound 513 was 2.35 metres high and seventeen metres across. Bibby cut away half of it on a north-northwest to south-southeast line, at right angles to the normal axis of the chambers, in order to obtain a clean section. The cut exposed the chamber entrance, the first capstone, the short flanking walls, and a ring wall of small boulders 10.5 metres in diameter.
On the axis of the chamber, opposite its entrance, the ring wall was interrupted by a gap one metre wide; to either side, and especially to the north, it showed a more regular vertical dry-stone face on the inner side with a jumble of stones piled outside. Beyond the gap lay a group of stones that seemed to be its original filling, and there a small lump of copper was found.
The section showed the sequence clearly. Limestone bedrock lies just beneath the surface, capped by ten to fifteen centimetres of chalky weathering and a thin brown humic layer suggesting the desert once bore grass. At the centre the chalk had been dug away and the chamber built directly on bedrock, the upcast chalk still visible as heaps on either side.
Above the chamber came first a heap of light sand, no larger than needed to hide the stones, which lay uncovered long enough for its surface to weather brown; only afterwards was the final cover heaped up from the ring wall inwards, layer upon layer. The mound was thus built in two distinct stages, perhaps separated by years.
The picture that emerges is of a chamber standing open, covered by a minimal mound and encircled at some two and a half metres by an unbroken ring wall. When the body was to be laid to rest, the stones were pulled away from the gap, the burial made, and the entrance blocked. The chamber itself measured 0.90 by 1.80 metres, with two alcoves at the eastern end.
Its walls were dry-stone work of large roughly squared blocks with smaller stones filling the gaps, battered inwards; each alcove was roofed with a single slab and the main chamber with four massive ones. Inside lay the powdery remains of an adult who had been placed on the right side, knees half bent and feet towards the entrance, accompanied by a young sheep or goat about four months old.
The grave goods were few but telling: an ostrich eggshell with one end cut away, perhaps a drinking beaker; a light-red vessel 26.5 centimetres high with a B73 rim bearing three scored lines, in ware type 3 with ochre inclusions; and, driven into the chinks of the end wall above the northern alcove, a copper spearhead and a square-sectioned copper ferrule.
Mound 514 lay close by and was excavated by Glob. It was considerably larger — twenty metres across and 4.60 metres high — and belonged to a group of six similar mounds, four of which the Bahrain National Museum excavated in the 1990s. A segment was cut in the western side, where massive stones soon appeared on the slope of the barrow.
When the side was cleaned it became clear that the mound had been ringed by two concentric walls of large roughly squared stones with smaller stones filling the gaps, the inner wall standing higher than the outer and forming a step up the side. The section at the edge of the excavation showed that this stone construction had originally been visible.
At the top of the excavated area a stone-walled shaft was found, 4.30 by 2.40 metres at the top and 3.45 by 1.20 at the bottom, 2.50 metres deep at the outer end and 3.90 at its highest point by the chamber entrances. About 1.80 metres above the foot of the shaft ran a narrow ledge along both of its sides.
At the eastern end of the shaft, towards the centre of the mound, appeared the entrances to two chambers, one above the other, the lower one metre high and the upper 1.16. Both were blocked with large stones, but a hole in the upper corner of each blocking showed that the chambers had already been plundered in antiquity.
The lower chamber was 3.20 metres long, 1.08 wide and 1.67 high, its floor formed by the bedrock forty centimetres below the shaft floor. It had two alcoves in the side walls at the east end, walls battered and built of five courses of large regular stones, the fifth also roofing the alcoves, and it was covered by five great slabs.
The upper chamber had no alcoves and was less regularly built. Surprisingly, its walls did not rest on the capstones of the chamber below but on a thirty-centimetre layer of sterile sand and gravel over twenty centimetres of pebbles — perhaps expressing a wish that here too, as in graves built on bedrock, the dead should lie on virgin ground.
The finds were scattered by the robbers: about sixty fragments of thin copper sheet, the possible base of a copper jar, some hundred fragments of a bitumen-coated beaker woven from palm leaves, and sherds of a wheel-made painted jar with wavy black lines on a cream band, an import belonging to a group of Indus-area vessels also known at Qala'at al-Bahrain.
Charcoal from the bottom layer of the lower chamber and from the original ground surface at the foot of the shaft was radiocarbon dated (AAR-10317 and AAR-10318), indicating a date in period IIa. As in mound 513, the chambers seem to have stood open and accessible for some time after building, the stone circles and the shaft visible, the covering completed only after burial.
The wider meaning of these two-storey chambers is reserved for the concluding chapter. It is enough here to note that mound 514 stands with five near-identical neighbours in a central open space of the Saar cemetery, and that such a group cannot be the burial place of ordinary villagers: they announce a rank.
Part Seven — The Aali Mound Cemetery: Setting and Royal Mounds
Between April 1960 and November 1961 the great cemetery south of Aali village was heavily damaged by bulldozing for gravel and stone used in land reclamation, and by the digging of a north–south water pipe. Several thousand mounds were destroyed. In the 1961/62 campaign Glob and his colleagues, with about ten local workers, carried out rescue excavations here.
Four Royal Mounds, numbers 201 to 204, were investigated in that first season. Work continued on a larger scale in 1962/63, when the two largest Royal Mounds were re-entered, a third mound (208) that may also be royal was excavated, and a large number of smaller mounds south of Aali were opened. The aim was to record as many as possible before they disappeared.
The excavated mounds fall into two groups. Group A comprises mounds 205–207, 209–220 and 222–225, lying up to four hundred metres southeast of the Royal Mounds. Mounds 209 to 211 had already been ripped open by the gravel diggers; 212 to 225 were chosen precisely because they were still undisturbed in an area otherwise largely destroyed.
These mounds were investigated summarily and no sections were drawn. The standard procedure was to uncover the capstones, draw and photograph them, remove one or more, then empty, describe and draw the chamber; the position of the contents was recorded only where there was reason to believe them undisturbed. Ring walls were sought by sounding, in vain.
Their absence is probably only apparent: the low height of the mounds and the lack of any ring wall at ground level suggest that the ground between the mounds had been raised considerably by material eroded from their tops. Between Groups A and B lay a wide belt completely emptied by bulldozers, bounded to the west by the water pipe.
West of the pipeline the mounds were still untouched, and there lay Group B: mounds 227 to 249, about one kilometre southwest of Group A, at the southeastern limit of the cemetery. Their preservation, including standing ring walls, makes them the most informative part of the Aali sample, and their finds turn out to be the earliest.
The chamber walls throughout were built in dry stone without mortar, only the largest chambers having plastered faces. The stones of consecutive courses were usually staggered for strength, but a clear vertical non-bonded break was often observed at the corners, showing that the walls were sometimes erected in separate sections by different hands.
Mound 203 is the largest of all. Prideaux investigated it in 1906/07 as his mound A, and it is the same mound that E. L. Durand tunnelled into in 1879. The bulldozers of 1960/61 damaged only its western side, exposing and partly removing a circular ring wall that still stood at least 3.15 metres high, several metres in from the foot.
An entrance passage ran radially inwards towards a central chamber, its axis 67 degrees east of north. Its slightly sloping dry-stone walls of quarried limestone rose to at least 4.25 metres above ground level, the last 2.65 metres of the passage were plastered, and the total length from the outer ring wall to the chamber was about 13.50 metres.
At the end of the passage stood a plastered step just in front of the chamber. Durand had called it a platform, and beyond it the floor dropped more than a metre to the smooth mortared floor of the chamber itself — a threshold arrangement that has no parallel among the ordinary mounds and belongs to the vocabulary of monumental architecture.
The roof blocks of the chamber had broken and fallen in, held up only by the sand that filled it. No tackle strong enough to support slabs weighing several tons could be obtained, and the excavation of the chamber had to be abandoned — a reminder that the limits of a rescue campaign are set by equipment as much as by time.
From the fill of the entrance passage came sherds that could be refitted into two beakers and three small bowls: fine sand-tempered, wheel-made, with black geometric decoration on a red slip and vertical burnishing strokes outside. They were probably deposited in the chamber and dragged out during one of the episodes of robbing, one of which left Islamic sherds in the same fill.
Durand's account fills out the picture: walls roughly mortared near the chamber, two coats of plaster at the step, a chamber some 2.80 metres wide with two large side chambers, and large quantities of charcoal that suggested to him a roof carried on date-palm trunks. Its diameter was estimated at 41 metres in 1961, and a low ridge some twenty metres out is probably the remains of a temenos wall.
Mound 201 lay southwest of mound 203, just outside the low ridge encircling it, and measured about twenty-four metres across and 3.5 metres high. Its chamber was 4.05 metres long, 1.07 to 1.16 wide and about two metres high, with two alcoves at each end — four in all — each roughly 0.6 metres deep and more than 1.5 metres high.
Both the walls and the floor were plastered, and the chamber was roofed with four large capstones, one missing at the east end. The alcoves were covered by smaller slabs forming part of the uppermost wall course, on which the great capstones rested. In the west wall a narrow door opening, closed by a large stone, gave access over a sill stone.
In the north and south walls of the main chamber were four holes cut into the plastered surface, sloping inwards and downwards, between five and twenty-five centimetres deep and set about 1.7 metres above the floor. Mackay had recorded similar holes in six of his more important tombs and suggested that they were intended to hold pegs.
On the floor lay a layer five to nine centimetres thick containing no finds at all; the chamber had been emptied long before. According to an inhabitant of Aali village, a water jar and a small stone vessel had been recovered from it on an earlier occasion — the kind of local testimony that often supplies the only trace of what a plundered Royal Mound once held.
Mound 202, south of 203, corresponds to Prideaux's mound L. Its chamber was two-storeyed, the lower one with four alcoves and plastered walls; Prideaux found fragments of two jars, one sieve-necked, with small bones and pieces of ivory and metal. The Danish work of 1961/62 recovered five late Kassite goblet bases of Failaka types 81, 83 and 85 — evidence that the monument was revisited long after Early Dilmun.
Mound 204 is the southeasternmost of the huge Royal Mounds on Prideaux's plan. The bulldozers of 1960/61 exposed and entirely removed its outer ring wall, which had stood some 3.80 metres high. An entrance passage ran radially inwards towards a central chamber, its axis thirty-three degrees east of north, with walls of quarried limestone widening slightly upwards.
At a distance of 1.80 metres from the outer wall stood a second ring wall whose base lay 3.80 metres above ground level. The mound therefore had the same exterior arrangement as mound 203: two concentric walls, the inner set higher than the outer so as to form a step up the flank — the terraced silhouette that the ordinary mounds echo on a smaller scale.
The passage fill produced about twenty-five small pieces of copper, lumps of charcoal, and an extraordinary variety of sherds. A few are ordinary settlement wares accidentally included, but most resemble burial pottery, in particular Mesopotamian imports; sherds from at least thirteen different vessels were counted, alongside fragments of an Islamic glazed bowl that betray a much later intrusion.
In 1962/63 it became clear that mound 204 contained two chambers one above the other. Only the entrance area could be examined, since the capstones were dangerously unstable; charcoal from it was radiocarbon dated to periods IIb–c. The damaged mound then stood nine metres high, its ring wall 28.5 metres across, and its original diameter is estimated at forty-seven metres, with a temenos ridge some eighty metres in diameter.
Mound 208 stood about four hundred metres east of mound 204 and had a diameter of some nineteen metres. Its chamber was 4.73 metres long and 1.26 wide, with two alcoves at each end, the deepest reaching 0.72 metres. Partly removed before excavation began, the chamber had been filled with sand and rubble in the process.
Both the walls and the floor were plastered, and plaster was also used to fill the joints between the three great capstones; the alcoves were covered by smaller slabs belonging to the uppermost course. The chamber was closed from the west by a stone wall of probably five courses of large unshaped blocks, the upper part of which had disappeared before excavation.
From the original deposit on the chamber floor came a red, hard-fired, dense vessel with turning marks inside and a crescent-shaped impression on the shoulder — either an intentional mark or an inclusion burnt out during firing. Such a mark, whatever its meaning, is one of the very few signs of individual identification on the pottery of these graves.
In the northwest alcove stood a low-necked, ridged storage jar with a triangular rim and three incised arrow signs on the outer rim face, its lower part still in situ and its upper part lying nearby. Vessels of this shape have close parallels in Barbar Temple IIb, which anchors the burial in Qala'at al-Bahrain period IIb.
Three sieve-necked vessels with rims of type B7 were recovered from the southern part of the chamber, all in the same light-red, cream-slipped ware: one has twenty-three holes in the sieve and two ridges on the shoulder, the second twenty-one holes and one ridge, the third is badly preserved. Sieve-necked jars occur only occasionally in graves and never in quantity elsewhere.
The rest of the assemblage is characteristic: fragments of ostrich egg, about twenty pieces of copper sheet with a short curved rod, some seventy-five fragments of bitumen bearing the impressions of woven palm leaves and probably belonging to a four-sided plate, eleven Venus clams and a fragment of pearl oyster, together with about a dozen fragments of ivory and pieces of a tooth, possibly of dugong.
Part Eight — The Aali Mound Cemetery: Group Aالباب الثامن — مقبرة عالي: المجموعة «أ»
Mound 205, a small tumulus seven metres across and less than half a metre high, covered a grave bordered on the east by a row of hand-sized stones. Mound 206, five hundred metres further south, was nine metres across and 1.7 high, with two ring-wall stones still in place, traces of others in the northern edge, and a robber's hole in the summit.
The chamber of mound 206 was 2.05 metres long and only 0.85 high, with two alcoves at the eastern end. Its walls were built of rough stones in four or five courses with smaller stones filling the gaps, the floor was the uneven bedrock under five centimetres of earth, and outside the chamber lay a packing of head-sized and larger stones piled against the capstones.
About thirty-five centimetres below the ceiling, in the upper part of the filling, lay a small collection of human and animal bones, heaped towards the entrance and scattered towards the east. The human remains belong to an adult male; the animal bones come from a goat aged between eight and twenty months and a younger sheep or goat under four months.
Mound 207, southeast of mound 204, had been almost completely removed, yet the chamber survived intact: 3.05 metres long, 1.10 wide and 1.3 high, with two alcoves at the eastern end. Only the two western capstones remained in their original position, and the chamber had been closed from the west, as is the rule in this cemetery.
Its walls were carefully constructed of large roughly squared stones in four courses, the gaps filled with smaller stones, and the floor was an even bedrock surface. The quality of this masonry marks the general improvement in building technique between period IIa and periods IIb–c: what had been rubble work becomes coursed, dressed and deliberate.
The chamber was almost filled with gravel, and only its western end preserved undisturbed layers; from there came most of the pottery, the ostrich egg and a carnelian bead. The two alcoves at the east end, each a little over half a metre deep, are the standard arrangement of the ordinary Late Type chamber.
The finds of mound 207 are unusually rich: a hundred to a hundred and fifty fragments of copper sheet, some ninety pieces of bitumen impressed with woven palm leaves from a four-sided plate, sherds of ostrich egg, a flat-based alabaster bowl with an everted rim, a biconical carnelian bead, seven Venus clams, and a sieve-necked vessel of type B7 with a stamp-impressed ridge.
That stamp-impressed ridge is chronologically useful: two parallels come from Qala'at al-Bahrain periods IIb–c, several from Failaka, and one from a Temple IIb context at Barbar. The same chamber also yielded a wheel-made necked jar painted in black over red and cream slips, and a small ball of organic matter containing fish bones and possible fibres of meat or skin — food left for the dead.
Mound 209 had a diameter of about twenty metres, though all its edges were destroyed. Its chamber, 2.85 metres long and 1.52 high, was closed from the west by two short flanking walls covered by split slabs, and roofed by three capstones forty centimetres thick. An intrusion had been forced through the east wall, and a displaced stone lay on the chamber floor.
On the floor at the western end lay a sieve-necked vessel of type B7 with twelve holes and a shoulder ridge, a Mesopotamian jar with a multi-grooved rim of type M12, the wheel-made base of another vessel, ostrich-egg fragments, twenty pieces of copper sheet, and eleven fragments of straight and bent copper rod — probably the remains of an omega-shaped holdfast.
Mound 210 was a small monument with a single alcove, its western part destroyed. Mound 211, whose eastern half had been removed, preserved a chamber 3.36 metres long, 1.13 wide and 1.55 high with two deep alcoves at the east end; three capstones some forty-five centimetres thick still covered the main chamber, which was cut half a metre into the subsoil.
The walls were built in five courses of roughly squared blocks with smaller stones filling the gaps, and the floor consisted of compact sand and limestone chip lying on bedrock. The fill was disturbed, and most of the finds had been pushed to the southwest end — the usual signature of an ancient robbing that emptied the chamber towards its entrance.
Among them was the most remarkable ornament from the whole Danish sample: a quadruple golden spiral with a transverse hole, apparently made from a gold tube split at both ends, each part rolled into a spiral, the central tube then flattened and the joining coils soldered. Similar objects are known from the Aegean to the Indus, which places Dilmun squarely inside a wide ornamental koine.
With it lay an alabaster vessel, fragments of ostrich egg, pieces of a four-sided bitumen-coated palm-leaf plate, a fragment of a bitumen bulla pressed around a string and perhaps carrying a faint seal impression, and a biconical carnelian bead whose surface had been completely etched white — a technique characteristic of the Indus workshops.
The pottery of mound 211 is dominated by Mesopotamian imports: vessels with everted rims, narrow shoulder ledges and cylindrical or ovoid bodies in fine sand-tempered wares with reddish slips, wheel-made but with clumsily shaped round bases. Such cylindrical jars are the commonest single type in the whole of Group A, and they belong in Mesopotamia to the Ur III and Isin-Larsa range.
Mound 212 held the skeleton of an adolescent of unknown sex together with the bones of a young sheep or goat, a Mesopotamian jar with a multi-grooved M12 rim, and a cylindrical import with a cream slip. The chamber, 2.20 metres long with a single alcove on the south side, is typical of the smaller Group A graves.
Mound 213 contained an elderly individual, thirty Venus clams heaped at the east end, a four-sided bitumen-coated palm-leaf plate, copper sheet, sheep or goat bones aged two to three years, a Mesopotamian cylindrical jar — and a shell seal whose natural spiral forms the obverse, together with painted ostrich-eggshell fragments bearing a pattern identical to one from mound 215.
Mound 214 was thirteen metres across, its chamber built of large roughly squared stones with smaller stones filling the chinks, in four courses and five in the west wall. The chamber had been entered intrusively through the alcove, and the remains of an adult female lay heaped in the northwest corner rather than in the position in which she had been laid.
Her grave goods were a lozenge-shaped carnelian bead, ostrich-egg fragments, five Venus clams, sixteen fragments of straight and curved copper rod that probably formed an omega-shaped holdfast, a four-sided bitumen-coated palm-leaf plate, and a Mesopotamian cylindrical vessel with a smooth golden-brown surface — the standard kit of a well-provided Group A burial.
Mound 215 was covered by three large capstones and a smaller one over the southern alcove, and had been entered intrusively from both east and west. Inside were an adult of unknown sex and a sheep or goat under ten months, together with an unusually varied set of objects that shows how much a modest chamber could hold.
They include a red-slipped wheel-made jar, a Mesopotamian everted-rim vessel, a shell seal with a natural spiral obverse, two carnelian beads — one biconical, one a cylinder disc — a four-sided bitumen plate, the base of an alabaster vessel, thirty-three Venus clams, a copper ring 1.7 centimetres across, and a painted ostrich-eggshell fragment.
Mound 216, only 6.5 metres across, held one of the smallest chambers in the group: 1.50 metres long, 0.76 wide, with a single alcove on the north side just thirty-eight centimetres high. Its walls were of medium-large limestone blocks in four or five courses, only the largest of them shaped, and the floor was hard fine sand.
It contained an adult of unknown sex and a number of bitumen fragments impressed with woven palm leaves, of indeterminate shape. That such a small and poorly furnished grave lies among far richer ones in the same group is a reminder that variation in wealth existed within the community of commoners as well as between commoners and princes.
Mound 217 held an adult female with sheep or goat bones, ostrich-egg fragments, seventy-five Venus clams, curved copper rods, a copper point that may be a spearhead or dagger, and three flat fragments of bone or ivory decorated with concentric circles, two of them worked on both faces. A B73 rim in ware type 3 completes the dating evidence.
Mound 218 was covered by four capstones, but its west wall was missing and the grave had been plundered from that side. The floor was a dark hard layer of sand and gypsum, and along the eastern part of the north wall lay a great quantity of unarticulated human bone — the physical trace of a chamber emptied and its contents swept aside.
The bones belong to an adult, probably female, and to a child of four to seven years. A broken B73 jar of ware type 3 stood by the east wall with two cranial fragments inside its base, and a second, small red jar with a cream surface lay directly in front of the north wall — an eloquent picture of disturbance rather than of burial.
Mound 219 contained an adult, probably female, with the teeth of a young goat and a single Venus clam. Mound 220, entered intrusively from the west, yielded a red-slipped vessel fragment, fourteen shells, two rectangular carnelian beads etched completely white, bitumen with palm-leaf impressions, a Mesopotamian cylindrical jar and goat teeth.
Mound 222 had two alcoves and a floor of hard sandy gypsum; the capstones over the main chamber were missing except for one lying in the earth-filled interior. It held human bone fragments, sixty-five Venus clams, a four-sided rimmed plate of bitumen-coated palm leaves, and a single square of copper sheet two millimetres thick.
Mound 223 contained a child and a sub-adult of fifteen to twenty years, two ochre-red carnelian beads, many shells, an almost complete sheep skeleton more than four years old, and several ivory objects: a grooved rod, a small bowl with a thickened rim, and two fragments decorated with the dot-and-circle motif familiar across the Gulf.
Mound 224, its capstones and west wall gone, still held a Mesopotamian M12 pot, nine shells and a bitumen plate. Mound 225 preserved a B73 jar of ware type 3 standing in the south alcove exactly as it had been placed — one of the very few vessels in the Danish sample recorded truly in situ.
Beside it lay the fragmented bones of an adult, goat teeth, ten fragments of copper rod, a piece of a silver-like mineral, a Mesopotamian wheel-made cylindrical jar and a multi-grooved M12 vessel. Taken together, the Group A graves are richer than their Saar counterparts, unusually full of Mesopotamian imports, and their material consistently points to Qala'at al-Bahrain periods IIb–c.
Part Nine — The Aali Mound Cemetery: Group B
Mound 227 measured 8.5 metres across, its ring wall 6.8 metres and formed of a single row of large stones. The chamber, 1.60 metres long, was built of three or four courses of very unequal limestone blocks, the lowest roughly squared, and closed from the west. It held a female aged fifteen to seventeen years, a young sheep or goat, and a fragment of a bevelled B9 rim.
Mound 228 was almost six metres across, its ring wall of small tightly packed stones sixty centimetres thick. The chamber, 1.90 metres long, was built in three or four courses of unshaped stones about thirty by twenty centimetres, its west wall missing and its floor the bedrock itself. Inside lay an adult male, a goat between three and a half and five years, and a bevelled B9 jar with a flat base.
Mound 229 had a ring wall 7.6 metres across and a chamber 1.60 metres long, roofed by four capstones. Large stones from the upper west wall had fallen inside — the trace of an intrusive entry — and the bones lay scattered: a femur in the middle of the chamber, half a cranium and some teeth in the northeast corner, all from an adult male.
With him lay a broken jar with a simple B9 rim in a crackled light-pink ware with a plum-red slip, a small bronze rod, and an almost complete goat skeleton more than four years old. This pear-shaped jar with its bevelled rim is the signature vessel of Group B, and it is the type that Højlund shows to have been most popular as a grave good in period IIa.
Mound 230 was 7.5 metres across with a ring wall of small tightly packed stones. Its chamber, 1.80 metres long, had a single alcove on the north side, longitudinal walls of three courses of small unshaped stones, and a floor of uneven bedrock. The fill was very stony and compact, and a complete cranium lay in the northeast corner, from an adult male.
Mound 231 had two alcoves at the east end and walls of three courses, the two lower of rather large and perhaps shaped stones, the upper of smaller unshaped ones. The cover of the northern alcove had been removed before excavation, and fragments of a pot lay by its entrance: a badly preserved bevelled B9 jar with a flat base in pink ware with a plum-red slip.
Mound 232 was seven metres across with a ring wall 5.2 metres in diameter. Its chamber, 1.75 metres long, was very irregularly built in four courses of medium-large unshaped stones, its floor of fine sand and gravel lying some ten to fifteen centimetres below the original ground surface, and it was covered by five capstones.
Only a few scattered human bones were found in it, with cranial fragments at the west end, apparently of an adult. Chambers such as this — small, roughly built, almost empty — represent the ordinary end of the Early Dilmun burial spectrum, and they vastly outnumber the elaborate graves that dominate the literature.
Mound 233 preserved a rarer situation. The chamber was filled to the upper course with loose sand and rubble, and within this deposit a human skeleton including half a cranium was found still in situ, together with a pottery vessel. The individual was a male aged eighteen to twenty years, and the pot has a simple B9 rim in crackled light-brown ware with a plum-red slip.
Mound 234 had a north wall of four regular courses of rather large unshaped stones and a chamber roofed with five capstones. At the east end a stone was missing from the top course and the fill contained much rubble, probably from an intrusive entry: a femur lay in the middle of the chamber and a cranium by the north wall, from an adult female, accompanied by a young goat under seven months.
Mound 235, nine metres across, had two alcoves at the east end, walls of three or four courses of large unshaped stones and three great capstones. A heap of earth filled the western half of the chamber, in which lay a person of twenty-one to twenty-five years, possibly male, with a bevelled B9 rim sherd and the bones of two goats, one under seven months and one about a year and a half.
Mound 236 was small, its chamber 1.65 metres long and built in four courses of medium-large unshaped stones. One of its large capstones had already been removed before excavation, and the chamber was filled with hard compact sand and rubble; the cranium lay against the north wall on the east side, belonging with the other bones to a male adult.
Mound 237 gave one of the most vivid scenes in the whole report. The remains of a human skeleton lay in situ on the floor, facing the north wall, but the cranium had been crushed by two large stones that fell into the chamber, and a pottery vessel lay on top of those very stones — clear evidence that the disturbance came after the burial had settled.
The skeleton is that of an adult male, and with him were the bones of four different animals: a goat of eight to twenty months, a possible goat of three to four months, another of about three years, and a sheep or goat over four years. The pot imitates a B73 jar closely but is handmade in a yellow, fine sand-tempered ware with a plum-red slip.
Mound 238 was built of small unshaped stones in three or four courses over a floor of coarse sand on uneven bedrock, and closed from the west. Its compact fill contained the remains of an adult male, whose mandible lay in the middle of the grave by the south wall, and an apparently complete goat skeleton of about three and a half years.
Mound 239 had a chamber only 1.50 metres long, covered by three or four capstones. Its eastern part was almost completely filled with earth and stones while the middle stood nearly empty; fragments of human bone from an adult male lay in the centre against the south wall, and the jaw of a sheep or goat of about a year and a half by the north wall.
Mound 240 was 9.5 metres across, its ring wall of a single row of large blocks. The chamber, 1.43 metres long and oriented west-southwest to east-northeast, was built in four or five courses of rather large, often roughly squared stones and covered by three capstones. It contained only the bones of a probable goat between three and seven months.
Mound 241 was six metres across, its chamber 1.40 metres long and built of rather small unshaped stones in three courses over uneven bedrock. It was filled with sand up to the second course and contained the skeletal remains of an adult of unknown sex and perhaps also of a sub-adult — one of several graves in which more than one individual may be represented.
Mound 242 was the smallest of the group, its chamber 1.30 metres long, 0.45 to 0.50 wide and 0.65 high, built of small unshaped stones in three courses. It was full of fine sand up to the capstones, and on the floor lay the scattered remains of a child of about ten years, recorded in a sketch showing cranium, vertebrae, scapula, arms, pelvis and legs.
Mound 243 had two shallow alcoves and long walls battered by twelve and twenty centimetres. Its chamber was half filled with loose sand, and remains of an individual aged about ten to fifteen years — cranium, pelvis, ribs and vertebrae — lay heaped in the middle by the north wall, together with the apparently complete skeleton of a goat of four to five months and sherds of a handmade vessel.
Mound 244 was 8.5 metres across, its ring wall of medium-large very tightly packed stones. The chamber had two alcoves at the east end and was covered by one large and two smaller capstones. Human remains lay scattered on the floor, a cranium fragment by the north wall and a femur lying across the chamber; with them was a nearly complete skeleton, possibly of a goat.
Mound 245 was 6.5 metres across, its chamber 1.40 metres long and covered by three capstones, one missing on the east side. It contained scattered pieces of an adult female, an apparently complete sheep or goat of five and a half to seven months, and a B73 jar of ware type 3 whose rim sherds lay in the northeast corner and base sherds in the middle of the grave.
Mound 246 is the best documented monument of Group B, its ring wall preserved in three courses and its chamber unopened at the start of work. The chamber, 1.70 metres long with a small alcove on the south side, was built of large unshaped stones in five irregular courses over degraded limestone bedrock and covered by five capstones.
It contained a male adult and an apparently complete goat of three to four months, most of whose bones came from different levels within the alcove. Two published sections through mound and chamber record seventeen distinguished contexts, from the robber's hole and the crystalline fine particles to the water-deposited grey-brown clay and the dark aggregated loam of an old vegetation level.
Mounds 247 and 248 lay about three hundred metres west of the rest, in a wadi. Water-deposited material had covered the foot of each mound, and the fine soil of their fill is a direct consequence of that setting. Mound 247, seven metres across, had a chamber of up to four irregular courses containing a few small fragments of a human skull.
From its southwest corner came sherds of a necked and ridged storage vessel with an early triangular rim in ware type 1 — a form paralleled at Barbar and belonging to the earlier part of period II. Mound 248, five metres across, had very irregular walls of large unshaped stones and produced sherds of a jar in reddish-grey ware with a dark core.
Mound 249, a smaller mound subsidiary to the largest in Group B and immediately north of it, had already been opened before the excavation. Its chamber was exceptionally large — 4.80 metres long and 1.35 wide, with two alcoves — its inner walls plastered, its capstones some thirty centimetres thick and 1.85 metres across, and it had been robbed from the north corner of the west end.
Mound 256 is a different kind of monument altogether: an elongated flat-topped mound eighteen by thirty-three metres and about 1.8 metres high, running parallel with a similar one on a ridge at the southeast corner of the Aali field. Glob excavated it in 1960 and found no trace of any burial. Visible from far off, it may have been a platform from which funeral processions were watched.
Mound 983 near Buri was reported in January 1959 by a BAPCO employee as a bulldozer removed it. It was twenty-five metres across and up to five metres high, its south wall of large blocks preserved 1.55 metres high, and its floor made of gypsum slabs covered by crushed gypsum. In the south part lay an adult skeleton on its left side, its skull handed in separately.
In front of the skeleton lay the sherds of a complete necked vessel with a triangular B3 rim and a ridged body in brownish ware with a cream slip, its mouth opening towards the southwest, and immediately north of the femur were strongly corroded traces of bronze. Graves like this, salvaged from the blade of a machine, make up a real part of the surviving record.
Group B as a whole is remarkably homogeneous. Its graves are small, their walls of unshaped stones in three or four irregular courses, their goods few: usually one pot of pear-shaped B9 type, sometimes none at all, and very often a slaughtered young goat. This is the material signature of period IIa, and it contrasts sharply with the imported wealth of Group A.
Part Ten — Dar Kulayb and Umm Jidr
Two mounds in the Dar Kulayb cemetery were excavated in 1965 by Cliff Bernett and Harvey Blackmore, employees of the Bahrain Petroleum Company, who passed their information to the Danish expedition. Part of that cemetery still survived in 2006, surrounded by the new Hamad Town planned in the 1980s — a reminder that some fields were preserved by chance rather than by policy.
Mound 252 was 4.25 metres across and 2.4 high, its chamber 1.70 metres long with an alcove on the north side at the east end. On the floor lay the crouched skeleton of an adult male, head towards the east and facing north, feet a third of a metre from the west end — the classic posture recorded by Frohlich for chambers with alcoves.
In the alcove stood a handmade pear-shaped jar with a simple rounded B9 rim, lying on its side with the opening towards the south. The southwest quarter of the alcove held sheep bones of seven to twenty months, and the southeast quarter a small heap of organic material, possibly dates, which was radiocarbon dated as sample K-5387.
Mound 253 is known only from two pottery vessels and some human bones identified as those of a male adult; no other information survives. One of the vessels appears to be a small pear-shaped jar eight or nine centimetres high, while the other belongs to no known type — a small but useful reminder of how much lies outside the established typologies.
The Umm Jidr cemetery is the southernmost in Bahrain and in 2006 was still almost completely intact. A French mission excavated seven mounds there in 1979, and according to Frifelt the thirty mounds Cornwall dug in 1940 were also in this field; on a 1964 air photograph at least twenty mounds can be identified by their robber pits and adjacent spoil heaps.
Among the mounds still recognisable is a large one with two chambers, one above the other, excavated by Cornwall, which contained the remains of two charpoys — light four-posted beds — several pieces of ivory apparently from two circular boxes, including a carefully worked segment of tusk bored with holes near the upper edge, a bronze pin, ostrich shells, and the skeletons of a man and a sheep.
In April 1965 the same two BAPCO employees reported an unrobbed burial at Umm Jidr, and Jørgen Lund and Malene Møller-Jensen completed its excavation over three days. The mound was six to seven metres across and about 2.25 high; the capstones appeared half a metre below the summit, over a chamber 1.80 metres long with a small alcove at the north of the east end.
Only a little sand had blown into the chamber. On the bedrock lay a well-preserved human skeleton resting on its right side with the hands in front of and below the head, the legs strongly flexed — and the bones of one hand were found inside the cranium, a detail that tells us the body decayed in an open, air-filled space rather than under earth.
In the middle of the alcove lay a jar on its side, base towards the northeast, with a vertical scored rim of type B73, a ledged shoulder and an oval body in handmade ware type 3. Since the B73 jar first appears in period IIa but becomes common in periods IIb–c, this undisturbed grave is dated to the later part of that range.
Part Eleven — Dating the Danish Excavated Burials
The variability within the fifty-four Early Dilmun burials presented in the book is extraordinary, but since they may span several hundred years, dating must precede any social interpretation. The author therefore works through each cemetery in turn, weighing the few datable vessels, seals and radiocarbon samples against the chronological framework established at the settlements.
The earliest graves at Aali are without doubt those of Group B. Its twenty-two graves are homogeneous in their few goods: mostly pear-shaped jars, sometimes red-slipped, belonging to period IIa; mound 247 has a storage vessel with an early triangular rim of the same date; and two graves contain a B73 or B73-like pot known already in IIa but commoner later.
Group A, also twenty-two graves, is equally homogeneous but demonstrably later. Five very similar sieve-necked vessels of type B7 occur in mounds 207, 208 and 209; the stamp-impressed ridge on the jar from mound 207 has parallels in Qala'at al-Bahrain periods IIb–c, in several cases from Failaka, and in a Barbar Temple IIb context — all indicating a post-IIa date.
The sieve-necked vessels of mound 208 were found with a ridged storage jar bearing incised arrow signs, closely paralleled in Barbar Temple IIb. The commonest type in Group A, the cylindrical Mesopotamian vessel with shoulder ledge and everted rim, is unfortunately not stratified at Qala'at al-Bahrain, but its association with M12 vessels places it in the Ur III to Isin-Larsa range.
The conclusion is that the two Aali groups belong to period IIa and to periods IIb–c respectively. Since Group B lies southwest and Group A northeast, closer to the Royal Mounds, this part of the cemetery evidently developed towards the north — the same kind of linear growth that the Saar trajectory revealed, and an independent confirmation of the model.
At Saar, mound 513 contained only one datable artefact, a B73 pot known from IIa but commoner in IIb–c. Mound 514 has no well-dated finds — its painted jar belongs to a group of Late Harappan imports found through periods IIa to IIc — but radiocarbon from the bottom of the lower chamber indicates period IIa, with a slightly earlier date from below the mound.
The two Dar Kulayb mounds contain pear-shaped vessels most at home in period IIa, a dating supported by the radiocarbon analysis of the organic material from mound 252. Mound 251 at Umm Jidr, with its B73 pot, belongs rather to periods IIb–c. Of the Royal Mounds, 203 may converge on period IIb, while 204 has a radiocarbon date falling within IIb–c.
Part Twelve — Early Dilmun Society: A Sketch
From the cuneiform sources of Mesopotamia, Dilmun emerges as the doorway to the east — to Magan in Oman and Meluhha in India — whence metal, stone, ivory and other exotic raw materials reached the cities of the south. Oppenheim described it as a market place, an emporium, a neutral territory in which the parties of the Gulf coast could exchange the products of their countries.
The archaeology of the last fifty years suggests a different picture: not one long-lasting neutral market, but two very different social formations replacing each other around 2050 BC. The first is documented from the early third millennium in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia through to period I in Bahrain — the same combination of household cooking pots and imported storage and fine wares.
In that first formation burials are small, simple rock-filled mounds with chambers for individual inhumation and little internal differentiation in grave goods. Though the region traded heavily with the seal-using civilisations of Mesopotamia and the Indus, neither stamp nor cylinder seals are found in it. Settlements are small and apparently unfortified, with no city walls, no towers and no major religious architecture.
The material therefore reflects a kinship-based society without permanent hierarchy, though participation in long-distance trade is likely to have produced some ranking. The sculptured steatite vessels of about 2700–2500 BC from disturbed graves at Tarut probably indicate such incipient hierarchy, as may a Girsu letter of about 2400 BC that mentions a Queen of Dilmun.
The modest scale of that development may be a direct consequence of Mesopotamian intervention along the Gulf. Akkadian kings repeatedly attacked cities on the Arabian shore, and it is notable that the sources mention campaigns against Magan but never against Dilmun. Sargon's proud claim that ships of Dilmun, Magan and Meluhha moored at the quay of Agade means, in effect, that the sea lane was kept open by force.
Around 2050 BC this changed dramatically. A cluster of interrelated novelties appears: Qala'at al-Bahrain grows from a trading post into a fifteen-hectare city with a stone wall; monumental ashlar warehouses form part of a palace organisation; the Barbar temples are built; local stamp seals appear; Mesopotamian and Umm an-Nar pottery is replaced by newly created local types; and the great bounded cemeteries are founded.
The labour and resources needed for the city wall, the warehouses, the temples and the Royal Mounds imply a large organisation, and the whole complex has been read as the material expression of the formation of a Dilmun state. That reconstruction, built purely from archaeology, has since been supported by tablets from Mari showing the Assyrian king Shamshi-Adad in diplomatic contact with a king of Dilmun.
The first phase, period IIa, is a humble beginning for a kingdom: the earliest city wall and the first Barbar temple were built of small uncut stones set in clay, the temple platform measuring only sixteen by twenty-four metres. Yet this is the phase of strongest Indus influence, when Dilmun chose the stamp seal rather than the cylinder, and adopted the Indus weight system outright.
Several seals bear Indus script, and Indus pottery influenced local painted decoration; even the north–south grid of the city may owe something to Indus town planning. But all these objects occur in perfectly standard Dilmun contexts, and original Indus seals and terracotta figurines are absent — which suggests that Dilmunites were imitating Indus administrative procedures rather than hosting a Harappan colony.
In the second phase, periods IIb–c, Dilmun changes radically. Small buildings at the centre of Qala'at al-Bahrain give way to monumental structures of limestone ashlars flanking a twelve-metre street; the Barbar temple platforms grow to twenty-five and then thirty-eight metres square; the city wall is reinforced; and a settlement is founded on Failaka to strengthen the Mesopotamian trade.
Indus influence declines and Mesopotamian weights appear instead — a set of eight barrel-shaped haematite weights and a pair of scale pans was found in a Saar burial of this date. The stamp seal of Arabian Gulf type is replaced by the fully standardised Dilmun type in Mature Dilmun style IA, whose radical change of iconography has been connected with Amorite immigration.
With the fall of the Ur III empire Mesopotamia lost its grip on the Gulf, and Dilmun could at last exploit its position as sole supplier to the Mesopotamian market — the age of the Babylonian merchant Ea-nasir around 1800 BC. Monopolising the copper trade from Oman may in turn have deprived the Umm an-Nar culture of its economic base and hastened its transformation into the Wadi Suq culture.
The third phase, after period IIc, is one of contraction. The palace storerooms at Qala'at al-Bahrain and the Barbar temple are abandoned, the Saar settlement shrinks, and finds become sparse. It is hardly a coincidence that this coincides with the collapse of southern Babylonian cities around 1740 BC: the disappearance of that rich market is the probable cause of the Gulf depression.
What survives of that period carries a clear Mesopotamian imprint: rims imitating Babylonian bowls, the point-drill technique in seals, and half the Failaka pottery imported from Mesopotamia. After centuries spent building a distinct Dilmun identity, the merchants seem to have accommodated themselves to the Babylonians, adopting elements of their dress, seal style, personal names and eating habits.
Part Thirteen — Social Complexity in the Graves
The organising features of the Early Dilmun landscape were fresh water, arable land, and at some remove a non-arable zone for the cemetery. Cardinal directions were irrelevant: the burial field may lie west of the village at Saar, north at Aali, and probably east elsewhere. What mattered was that the dead occupied ground that the living could not farm.
Because the mound fields grew outward from a starting point, geographical distance came to stand for genealogical time, and the cemetery became a legible representation of the history of the descent group. At Saar the earliest burials lie about a kilometre from the settlement, the latest just one or two hundred metres away — a whole lineage written across the ground.
Rank is read from a small set of covarying features: the length of the chamber, the number of alcoves, whether the chamber is single or two-storeyed, whether its walls are plastered, and how many chambers stand inside one ring wall. The longer the chamber, the more alcoves it has and the greater the likelihood of two storeys and plaster.
The Late Type mound itself already implies a social threshold. In period I a single family could probably build its own grave, but procuring and manoeuvring the great capstones demanded the cooperation of a large group and perhaps of specialists. Capstones therefore signal both the ability to mobilise labour and the necessity of an organisation larger than the household.
In period IIa ordinary chambers measure between about 1.3 and 2.4 metres and carry none, one or two alcoves; mound diameters run from four to sixteen metres. Within this range a few graves stand out, such as mound S-100 at Saar, sixteen metres across with ample free space and a fuller set of goods — a higher-ranking segment among the commoners.
Above them stands a different order: the two-storey chambers. Six such mounds occupy a central open space at Saar, one is known at Umm Jidr, and the small Royal Mounds at Aali probably belong here too. Bahrain in period IIa was therefore ruled by several high-ranking lineages, each heading its own region, with Aali already the most important.
In periods IIb–c everything increases: chamber length, the number of alcoves, mound diameter and height, the quality of the stone dressing and the quantity of grave goods. Shaft graves appear at Saar as a wealthy stratum among the commoners; one of them, mound 352, contained a male with a set of Mesopotamian haematite weights and copper scale pans — the grave of a man engaged in trade.
Crucially, from period IIb onwards two-storey chambers are built only in the Royal cemetery at Aali. The princely lineages of Saar and Umm Jidr were replaced by a single royal lineage at the centre of the island, a political unification echoed in the seals, which pass from the diversity of period IIa to the extreme standardisation of Mature Dilmun style IA.
The Charnelhouse — a heap of skeletons in wholly non-standard circumstances, dated by its seals to period IIa — may be evidence that this transfer of power was not peaceful. The alternative reading, that the seals simply accompanied their owners at the moment of death, points in the same direction: these people were not buried, they were disposed of.
After period IIc the pattern breaks. Mounds with several chambers inside one ring wall, often without alcoves and provided with shafts, become common; here the shafts allowed repeated access, for these are collective graves holding two, three or more individuals. The change may reflect economic necessity, several families pooling the cost of a monument in a time of scarcity.
The overall trajectory is clear. The earliest mounds of period I reflect a simple kinship-based society; from the beginning of period II two socio-political classes are visible; through periods IIa to IIc investment in burial rises steeply and stratification deepens; and in the post-IIc recession Dilmun becomes less stratified and loses part of its cultural identity to Mesopotamian models.
The author closes the argument with a caution and an invitation: the evidence for the rise and collapse of social complexity in Early Dilmun is still limited, but the mound cemeteries of Bahrain are an outstanding laboratory for the history of the Middle East, and new excavation combined with the registration of the masses of unpublished material in the National Museum would transform what we know.
Part Fourteen — The Appendices
Appendix 1 reports a pilot project in digital mapping. Because most of the Saar mounds have vanished, field survey is impossible; but a series of vertical air photographs taken in November 1959 captured the fossilised landscape before its destruction. Seven overlapping frames, scanned at 1200 dpi, cover the whole cemetery in remarkable detail.
The frames were first fitted to one another by their overlaps, then geo-referenced against a 1:10,000 map of 1986 and digitised in a desktop mapping system. In about fifty efficient working hours 12,686 mounds were drawn as vector polygons — of which 12,561 are Early Dilmun, the rest presumed Tylos-period graves near the village.
Quality control matters as much as the map. Comparison with Ibrahim's transect shows that about ninety per cent of the mounds are recognisable on the photographs; the diameters read from the shadows are systematically some twenty-three per cent smaller than excavated diameters, because the flat eroded skirt of each mound casts no shadow.
From the corrected total the authors estimate an original 13,996 mounds at Saar, holding about 25,963 individuals over some three hundred and fifty years — roughly forty mounds and seventy-four burials a year. Applying a life expectancy of thirty-five to forty years yields a living population of about 2,600 to 3,000 people behind the cemetery.
The map also reveals spatial rules. Large mounds are ringed by an empty circular space, often flanked by a ring of medium-sized mounds of nearly identical size placed at regular intervals; sometimes several concentric rings of progressively smaller mounds radiate from a central one. Social status evidently structured where the next grave could be built.
Large mounds also cluster along the edges of the field, where even within their own size class they exceed the average — probably a late feature, and if so an index of growing inequality. Beside both known Saar settlements such clusters appear at the cemetery edge, suggesting that peripheral large mounds may in general point to an adjacent village.
Finally the vector map is linked to a database, so that each polygon carries the excavation record of its mound: chambers, alcoves, human remains and artefacts. Queries can then be mapped — the distribution of pear-shaped and cylindrical jars, for example, immediately displays the chronological drift of the field, and the same tool would serve heritage management as well as research.
Appendix 2 examines the animal bones from twenty-eight mounds. Sheep, goat, mongoose, desert hare, a dog-like animal and possibly camel were identified, but the assemblage is overwhelmingly of sheep and goat, and goats outnumber sheep about four to one — the reverse of what settlement and temple sites show, which proves that goats were deliberately chosen for burial rites.
Most animals were killed young: of thirty determinable individuals only four were adult, and about half the young sheep and goats died in their first year. Cut marks concentrate on tarsals, humeri, femora and vertebrae, and traces of fire appear only on projecting parts — the carcass was skinned, jointed and roasted in large portions with the flesh still on the bone, then placed in the grave.
Appendix 3 presents four new radiocarbon determinations and a full recalibration of all nineteen Danish dates from Bahrain and Kuwait using IntCal04. Two of the new samples come from mound 514 at Saar, one from mound 204 at Aali, and one from the organic material — possibly dates — in the alcove of mound 252 at Dar Kulayb.
Appendix 4 deals with the Charnelhouse. In the summer of 1960 a bulldozer digging for sand north of the Budayyi road uncovered a large group of human skeletons in complete disorder just below the surface. Between 1960 and 1968 seventeen stamp and cylinder seals were recovered from the heap, mostly by amateurs sieving the deposit.
The find is not a normal grave: it lacks architecture and ordinary grave goods, and multiple skeletons are exceedingly rare in period IIa, to which the seals date it. Nor are seals normally deposited with the dead. The likeliest reading is that these people died violently and were never given proper burial, the seals being simply what they carried on their bodies.
Kjærum's catalogue describes each piece. Seal 1 shows two figures seated on chairs with S-curved backs drinking through tubes from a common jar, stars between them; seal 2, two naked men flanking a palm frond with a crescent above; seal 3, a frieze of bulls with lowered heads, their muzzles and eyes rendered in remarkable detail.
Others carry a bull below two long-necked birds, a bull with linear figures above it, two horned animals set head to tail with a crescent before the chest, and various geometric fields. Traces of white glaze survive in the grooves of several bosses, and a number are of black stone rather than the usual grey steatite.
The rest of the group includes a long-horned animal in simple line drawing, a seven-pointed star radiating from a central dot, a face divided into three hatched panels by deep furrows, and a swimming turtle with bent limbs and a dot on either side of its shell. Two cylinder seals, one of white limestone-like stone, complete the assemblage.
Appendix 5 identifies the omega-shaped copper objects that recur in the Aali graves. First noted by During Caspers and interpreted by Reade as holdfasts, their function was confirmed by a Hamad Town grave in which two such pieces were still attached below the rim of a cylindrical copper bucket, with a third found beside an ivory vessel.
Appendix 6 lists the Hysore collection: eleven items salvaged from burial mounds by an employee of the Bahrain Petroleum Company and handed to the Danish expedition around 1965, at a time when Bahrain had no archaeological museum with storage facilities. They are now in the Bahrain National Museum, and include ridged globular jars, a Failaka E-ware vessel and two tall B73 jars in ware type 3.
The book ends where its preface began. Bahrain's mound cemeteries are of outstanding value to humanity, they have lost tens of thousands of monuments within a single lifetime, and what has been salvaged is still only partly published. Højlund's conclusion is deliberately modest: some new insight into Early Dilmun society has been gained, but our knowledge of these magnificent cemeteries remains a sketch.
